Frequently asked questions

What is Detrash Portland?

Detrash Portland started as a community based organization comprised of volunteers dedicated to picking up trash in the Portland area. We briefly became a non-profit organization in September 2020. Then in January 2021 we joined the non-profit SOLVE. Detrash Portland is now a program under SOLVE but our mission remains the same. We will continue to hold weekly events all over Portland where volunteers can come together to do good collectively, build community and leave a postive impact.

How can I get involved?

We are always seeking additional volunteers for our pick up events. Check the events, Meetup or Facebook pages for volunteer opportunities. Registering on these pages helps us have a better idea of how many volunteers will be showing up. You can also share our events with friends through social media and word of mouth to help amplify our reach. If you don’t feel comfortable participating in a group event, we recommend that you begin by picking up trash in your neighborhood to make a difference in your immediate surroundings. Eventually we hope that you have an opportunity to make your way to one of our events. Looking to do more? Detrash Portland designates team leaders to help set up and direct volunteers at events. Team leaders receive additional training on how to properly collect and handle hazardous materials. Chat with one of the team leaders during the event or send us a message to express your interest. If you have additional skills or ideas on how Detrash Portland can further our impact, please send us an email through our contact page.

Do I need to sign a waiver ahead of time?

We request that you sign a waiver in advance whenever possible to make things smoother on the day of the event. You can sign the waiver digitally by registering for the event on the SOLVE events page or printing and filling out the appropriate physical form below and bringing it with you the day of the event. Adult Waiver - All participants 18 and over who did not register on the SOLVE website must complete this form Youth Waiver - Unaccompanied youth under 18 must have a legal guardian fill out this form If you are unable to register in advance, we will have physical copies available at the event.

What can I expect at an event?

Volunteers will check in at the pre-designated location with one of our team leaders and will sign a safety waiver. After signing in you will be provided with a trash grabber, gloves, a high-vis vest and a trash bag. After a brief safety talk you will be divided into groups and sent out to pick up trash in the surrounding neighborhood. Events typically last for two hours, but volunteers do not have to stay for the full allotted time.

Can I receive community service hours for participating?

Yes. We provide signed community service hour receipts upon request. Our events last 2 hours but you can be credited with extra time if you show up early to help us set up or stay late to help with disposal.

Can I recommend a location for a clean up event?

Yes. We are always looking for suggestions on areas that need cleaning. Please go to the contact page and send us an email with your idea for a location. Please keep in mind that any suggested locations will need a large open space where volunteers can initially gather while complying with safe social distancing practices. We typically hold events starting at parks in order to comply with social distancing guidelines while we sign in volunteers and hand out equipment.

Do I have to wear a mask?

Yes. Masks are mandatory so our events can follow safety guidelines outlined by the state to prevent the spread of Covid 19.

Do I need to bring anything?

Detrash Portland will provide all volunteers with trash grabbers, trash bags, gloves and high-vis vests at events. We also try to provide water and snacks at events. If you have your own equipment, we recommend that you bring it.

What are your safety precautions?

Volunteers are instructed to comply with social distancing guidelines throughout the event and masks are mandatory. We sanitize all of our equipment after each event and wash vests and gloves. A safety brief given at the beginning of every event instructs volunteers on how to avoid hazardous materials.

Can I bring children or pets to an event?

Children can participate if accompanied by an attentive adult. Minors aged 14-17 can participate without adult supervision but will need to sign an additional youth waiver. Well behaved animals are welcome to join you at an event. However, it may be difficult to hold a leash, trash grabber and trash bag all at once. Please use your best judgment.
